* Dermal fillers can be used to revolumise areas of the face that have lost volume, or to non-surgically change the shape of the face
* Common areas for treatment with dermal fillers include; lips, cheeks, tear troughs, chin, nose, brows, nasolabial folds, mouth corners, and wrinkles (static wrinkles).
* There are a number of temporary dermal fillers available lasting from 4 months to 2 years.
* Filler types JU/JU+/JUR//R/P/RSQ/V can be dissolved by injection of hyaluronidase if there are any problems.
* Permanent fillers have a greater rate of serious complications such as infection and lumps (in comparison to temporary fillers) and are not recommended.
* Treatment with dermal fillers involve firstly numbing the area to be treated, and then injecting the filler. There are usually some temporary side effects post-treatment, including redness, swelling, asymmetry and bruising.
* Dermal fillers are a safe and effective method of non-surgically shaping, volumising, lifting, and rejuvenating the face
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers can be placed into 2 categories:
1. Non-permanent fillers
2. Permanent fillers
We use non-permanent fillers for the following reasons:
1. Safety: The products are made from natural substances which make them very safe.
2. Adjustability: Non permanent fillers can be dissolved to fine tune results or reverse treatment
Non-permanent fillers are made from Hyaluronic Acid which is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the human body. It is essentially a sugar and water molecule.
Certain types of dermal fillers available at Cosmetic Express cannot be fully named due to TGA restrictions. We only use temporary fillers lasting from 6 to 18 months, and are composed of substances that are naturally found in the skin.
How do they work?
Dermal fillers are employed to volumise various areas on the face. As we age, we lose facial fat as well as collagen and elastin. This can lead to flattening and drooping of the skin causing "wrinkles" and "folds".
Dermal fillers are quite commonly used in combination with anti-wrinkle injections to give optimal results. These two procedures work very well together and improve the longevity of both treatments. Dermal fillers provide an instantaneous result by filling the injection site. The amount of filling or lift is determined by how much product is used and product selection. The results continue to improve as the product draws in moisture over the first 1-2 weeks following treatment. It has also been proven that dermal filler treatments induce the body's own collagen production.
Dermal fillers will last from 6-18 months in most cases, depending on what kind of filler is used and where in the face it is placed.
What does treatment with dermal fillers involve?
During a consultation with one of our medical staff, we will discuss and advise you which fillers and which areas are best to treat. We will outline for you the amount of fillers required, the price, the side effects and the after-care required.
Treatment usually involves the application of local anaesthetic cream to the treated area or a nerve block prior to injection. The dermal filler is then comfortably injected into the treated area to fill out the line, wrinkle or fold. For those who are nervous about the procedure (this is very normal!) we can provide nitrous oxide or 'laughing gas' to help settle your nerves and to help reduce any discomfort.
Treatment times vary depending on the amount of fillers required and the areas treated, but generally take from 30 to 60 minutes.
After treatment, it is possible to apply make-up if applicable, and to go about your normal activities. We usually ask you to refrain from heavy exercise however.
Treatment with dermal fillers sometimes does take more than one session to get the best results. The first treatment lays the foundation for the subsequent treatments, and future treatments allow for any adjustments to be made.
Where Are They Used?
Dermal fillers can be used in most areas around the face. The most common treatment areas are : Lips / cheeks / under eyes / chin / nose and even the jaw line. Dermal Fillers can also be injected into scars to reduce their appearance.
Below is a guide of how long treatments will last in different areas:
Lip: 6 - 8 months
Smile lines: 8-12 months
Cheeks: 12-24 months
Under eyes: 8-12 months
Nose: 12-24 months
Chin: 12-24 months
What are the side effects of filler treatments?
There is usually some transient redness after the injections. Swelling is also present after the procedure, especially with any lip enhancement procedure. Swelling of other areas post-treatment tends to temporarily enhance the effect of the dermal filler, and it often takes 3 or more days to see the actual real improvement without swelling.
Bruising can also occur, and if it does, it can take normally take a week or two to completely disappear. Make-up/lip stick can be worn (if applicable) soon after treatment should there be a need.
Asymmetry is also possible, but correctable on a subsequent visit.
Small lumps can occur, and these will either dissipate in a few weeks, or may require dissolving with hyaluronidase.
*Note that if you have a history of cold sores and the treatment area is around the mouth, then you should notify your treating doctor as filler treatment can cause cold sore flare ups. You may be instructed to take anti-viral medications prior to treatment if this is the case.
Are dermal fillers safe?
Yes, there are few risks associated with the use of dermal fillers and few long-term side effects with the (temporary) fillers. Most fillers comprise of substances that are naturally present in the body. Dermal fillers have been used safely for cosmetic reasons for over 20 years.
Our opinion of permanent fillers is that their safety profile is not as high as temporary fillers. Permanent fillers have previously been fraught with complications such as severe infections and lump formation that requires surgical excision. No permanent fillers are used at Cosmetic Express.
Can dermal fillers be combined with anti-wrinkle injections?
Yes. Despite having different actions, they are commonly used together. In fact, anti-wrinkle injections often prolong the effect of dermal fillers. Anti-wrinkle injections relax the underlying muscle that causes expression lines, and dermal fillers provide volume to fill in static lines.
